  • Casey Newman - Surface Design Series - Eco & Cochineal Dyeing

    10:00 am - 4:00 pm, Sunday, March 17, 2019

Learn to create beautiful nature-inspired textiles using natural dyes and real leaves! Participants in this workshop will learn two ways of combining natural dyes with botanical printing, also called eco-printing - the art of creating permanent leaf prints using only the natural pigments in the leaves themselves. We will use natural cochineal dye and learn to use modifiers to shift the color from hues of pink to deep purple.

Participants will create two silk scarves (11 x 60 inches) as well as two similar lengths of cotton fabric that can be used in future sewing projects. Participants will also receive handouts that include complete descriptions of methods covered in class as well as additional information and sources for supplies.

    Topics covered will include:

    Mordanting protein fibers
    Preparing cochineal dye
    Natural dye methods
    Using modifiers to alter color
    Botanical printing methods
