Paprika Quilt Pattern

Paprika Quilt Pattern Designed by Valori Wells Finished quilt size 80” x 92” New York Beauties in all of their majesty have been an inspirational quilt block for Valori Wells, who designed this as 2007 Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show raffle quilt. She took the block and elongated it and extended the points into a sunrise shape and a large rectangle. When the shapes are joined together they create flower like shapes that you might see in the garden. In the original version, reds were chosen for the points, with rich brown tones in the background. The narrow pieced sashing is stitched as strips and cut apart to create small blocks of color. Green was added to the palette in these strips as an accent color. We have since made this quilt in both a "High Desert" and a "Sunset" version. (The directions remain the same for all versions of the quilt.)

Foundation papers are included for the New York Beauty blocks. For the center sections in the blocks you will either use the paper pattern provided or make a pattern from it out of template plastic. In our quilt we used a variety of fabrics for each of the color families which creates a textural effect. You could easily use just one fabric or you might choose to make the individual flowers different colors like you might see in a garden.

Materials Needed:
(For each of the sections you may choose several fabrics, instead of just one.)
5 2/3 yard total for the points, centers, and sashing
8 7/8 yard total for the background, sashing, and binding
3/4 yard total for the accent color in the sashing

5 1/2 yard backing
84” x 96” batting (queen size)

*NOTE* The yardage amounts listed are ample to make this quilt, but it is a paper-pieced design. Depending on how efficient you are with your fabric, you may need more or less fabric than we have indicated. Since we recommend a variety of fabrics for each color, you can easily add more fabric if needed.
