Civil War or Soldier’s Cot Quilts were made using simple quilt block patterns, combined with other larger pieces of fabric such as old curtains, old clothing, and feed sacks. The larger pieces of fabric were cut into long wide strips. These strips were sewn between long rows of pieced blocks. A cot quilt was approximately 54” x 84”, long and narrow. These quilts could be rolled and carried on the soldiers backs. Our quilt is a bit larger than the traditional cot quilt.
