These quilts were originally designed to showcase Woodwinds - a fabric collection made from wood blocks hand cut by Valori Wells for Free Spirit. These patterns will translate well to other fabric, including batiks and tone-on-tone prints.
Windstar comes from an antique quilt block. When they are put together, a secondary pattern emerges. Templates are used for cutting all the block pieces. The finished block size is 9”.
Chloe is made up of a center block, with alternating 1 1/2” and 3 1/2” strips. Solid colors are used for the 1 1/2” strips and prints are used for the 3 1/2” strips. Each round of the 3 1/2” strips uses two different fabrics from the same color family. They are added on opposite sides of the previous row. The strips are sewn in pairs, then they are stitched onto the center square and mitered with each round.
Woodwinds is a scrappy quilt where e ach block uses a light and a dark fabric to create the contrast in the block. Large and small half-square triangles make up the block. The finished size of the block is 8”.

– 1/8 yard each: Blue solid, Yellow moon, Gold leaf
– 1/4 yard each: Purple swirl, Purple solid, Red Daisy, Red stripe, Yellow solid, Green swirl, Green daisy, Red solid, Periwinkle flower, Periwinkle daisy, Green solid, Chartreuse leaf, Chartreuse swirl
– 1/3 yard each: Periwinkle solid, Chartreuse solid, Blue-green solid
– 3/8 yard: Turquoise solid
– 2/3 yard each: Blue-green daisy, Blue-green stripe
– 1/2 yard each: Turquoise spiral, Turquoise circle, Purple stripe, Purple daisy, Blue moon, Blue spiral, Purple solid

Woodwinds Materials List:
1/4 yard of 33 fabrics for blocks
1/2 yard of 9 fabrics for blocks and outer border
7/8 yard dark or black for inner border and binding

Note: If you are pulling fabric from your stash for Woodwinds, you will only need a 9” x 14” piece for the 33 fabrics for the blocks. If you are purchasing fabric, you must have a minimum 9” in width to make the blocks (1/4 yard). There is enough fabric in the 1/4 yard to make 108 blocks, so the quilt can be increased to 89” x 89”. (If you choose to do this, you will need 3/8 yard more black.)
